An SEO power page, often called a pillar page, is one in-depth page that becomes the best answer on a topic your customers care about. Today it should be built to be quoted as well as ranked: a direct answer at the top, sections written as the questions people ask, real examples and data, an FAQ with schema markup, and links to related pages on your site.
Updated October 2026: this guide has been rewritten for search results that now include AI Overviews and AI assistants.

What Is an SEO Power Page?
A power page is a comprehensive, well-organized resource on one important topic, such as “how much does a new roof cost in Phoenix” for a roofer or “how to choose a managed WordPress host” for a hosting company. Instead of many short posts that each touch the topic, one strong page covers it completely and links to supporting pages that go deeper on each subtopic. Together they form a topic cluster that shows search engines your site is an authority on the subject.
Why Do Power Pages Matter for AI Search?
Google’s AI Overviews and AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude build answers from sources that explain a topic clearly and accurately. A page that answers the main question directly, then each follow-up question in its own section, is easy for these tools to understand and quote. That makes a power page useful in three places at once: regular rankings, featured snippets and AI answers. This is the heart of answer engine optimization.
How Do You Choose the Right Topic?
- Start with revenue. Pick a topic tied to a service or product you want to sell more of.
- Use real questions. Collect the questions customers ask your team, and check Google Search Console and Google’s “People also ask” boxes for related searches.
- Look at what ranks now. Note what the top results cover and what they miss; your page should answer more completely and more clearly.
- Combine overlapping posts. If you already have several thin posts on the topic, merge their best parts into the power page and redirect the old URLs to it.
How Should You Structure a Power Page?
- A direct answer first: 40 to 60 words right under the title that answer the main question.
- Question-based sections: each H2 is a question your customers ask, answered in the first one or two sentences, then explained.
- Scannable formats: numbered steps for processes, tables for comparisons and prices, short paragraphs and bullet lists.
- Real evidence: your own examples, photos, project results and data, with sources for any statistics.
- A FAQ section covering follow-up questions, marked up with FAQ schema.
- Clear authorship: who wrote it, their role and experience, and when it was last updated.
- Internal links to the related service page and to two or three supporting articles, with link text that names the page it points to.

How Long Should a Power Page Be?
As long as it needs to be to answer the topic completely, and no longer. There is no word count that guarantees rankings; padding a page to hit a number makes it harder to read and harder for AI tools to quote. Many strong pillar pages run 1,500 to 3,000 words because they cover several related questions, but clarity matters more than length.
Which Structured Data Should You Add?
Use Article or BlogPosting markup with the author and dates, FAQPage markup for the question-and-answer section, and BreadcrumbList markup so search engines understand where the page sits on your site. On service pages, Service and Organization markup connect the content to your business. Structured data does not guarantee rich results, but it makes your content easier for search engines and AI tools to interpret. Our schema markup service can handle this.
How Do You Promote a Power Page?
- Link to it from your home page, service pages and related blog posts.
- Share it with customers in email newsletters and on social media.
- Offer it to industry associations, partners and local organizations that link to helpful resources.
- Turn sections into short videos, social posts or a downloadable checklist that point back to the page.
How Do You Keep It Working?
Review the page at least twice a year, or whenever prices, regulations or best practices change. Update facts and examples, add new questions customers are asking, and change the “updated” date only when the content has genuinely changed. In Search Console, watch which searches bring visitors to the page, and expand the sections that attract them.
