How to Show Up in AI Search
1. Make Sure AI Tools Can Reach Your Site
Check your robots.txt file and any security settings. Some sites block AI crawlers by accident. The crawlers that power AI search answers include OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT), PerplexityBot (Perplexity) and Claude-SearchBot (Claude). Google AI Overviews use Google’s regular search crawler.
Also submit your site to Bing Webmaster Tools. Several AI assistants draw on Bing search results.
2. Describe Your Business the Same Way Everywhere
AI tools piece together what they know about you from your website, Google Business Profile, directories, reviews and articles. Use the same business name, services, locations and description everywhere. If one site says you are a web design firm and another says you are an ad agency, the AI has less confidence in either.
3. Write Clear Answers
- Start service pages with a plain one- or two-sentence summary of what you do, who you serve and where.
- Answer the questions customers ask: cost ranges, timelines, what is included, service areas.
- Put the answer first, then the detail.
- Use headings that match real questions where it makes sense.
4. Add Structured Data
Schema markup labels the facts on your pages. Organization or LocalBusiness schema, Service schema, Person schema for your owners or experts and FAQPage schema all help machines read your site correctly.
5. Earn Mentions and Reviews
AI assistants lean on what others say about you. Recent, detailed reviews, local news mentions, chamber and association listings and industry directories all add support.
6. Test and Measure
- Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude the questions your customers ask, such as “best roofing company in Mesa.” Note who gets named.
- Repeat the same questions every month.
- In Google Analytics, watch referral traffic from chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai and claude.ai.
