The Local SEO Checklist

The steps that help a local business show up in the Google map pack and local results. When someone searches “near me” or names your city, Google shows a map with a short list of businesses. Those spots get a large share of the calls. This checklist covers what we check first for every local client.

1. Claim and Complete Your Google Business Profile

  • Claim and verify the profile. Remove or merge any duplicates.
  • Choose the primary category that matches your main service. Add secondary categories only if they fit.
  • Use your real business name. Adding keywords to the name breaks Google rules and can get the profile suspended.
  • List every service, with a short description for each.
  • Set your service area or address, hours and holiday hours.
  • Add real photos of your team, work, vehicles and location. Add new ones each month.
  • Add booking, quote or menu links if you have them.

2. Keep Your Business Details the Same Everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number (often called NAP) should match on your website, Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Yelp, Facebook and industry directories. Google and AI tools compare these details. Mismatches lower trust.

  • Search your business name and old phone numbers to find outdated listings.
  • Fix or remove listings with old addresses.
  • Use the same format every time, such as “Suite 120” or “#120”, not both.

3. Build a Steady Flow of Reviews

  • Ask every customer, not only the happy ones. Google does not allow asking only customers you expect to leave good reviews.
  • Send a direct review link by text or email right after the job.
  • Reply to every review. Thank people for good ones. Respond calmly and helpfully to bad ones.
  • Aim for new reviews every month. Recent reviews carry more weight with customers.

4. Build Pages for Each Service and Area

One page that lists everything you do will not rank for all of it. Give each main service its own page. If you serve several cities, create a page for each area with real local detail: projects you have done there, neighborhoods you cover and reviews from customers in that area.

Avoid copying the same page and swapping the city name. Thin copies rarely rank and can hurt the rest of the site.

5. Add Local Schema Markup

Schema is code that labels your business details for search engines. At a minimum, add LocalBusiness schema (or a more specific type, like Plumber or MedicalClinic) with your name, address, phone, hours and service area. Add Service schema to service pages and FAQPage schema where you have FAQs.

6. Post and Update Regularly

  • Share Google Business Profile posts for offers, projects and news.
  • Answer common questions on your website FAQ page.
  • Keep hours current, especially around holidays.

7. Track What It Produces

Watch calls, direction requests and website clicks in your Business Profile performance report. Use call tracking on your website so you know which calls came from organic search.
